Should I Sell My Bridal Gowns to Bridal Stores that Buy Wedding Dresses
For as long as we can remember there’s never been a great way to liquidate sample or discontinued wedding dresses in the bridal industry. When you receive that disc list once or twice a year from your designers you’re left with a few options:
sample sale (a la our favorite Friends episode 👆)
donate (Brides Against Breast Cancer is a great option)
consign
sell your wedding dresses to an off-the-rack store
do nothing and eventually end up with 20 years worth of sample bridal gowns in a storage container
All options are valid (except maybe that last one) and as we discussed in our last post there are both advantages and disadvantages to consigning or selling your wedding dresses. But let’s say you’ve decided on the “sell” option. Should you sell your dresses to bridal stores that buy wedding dresses? Or should you sell on one of those bridal gown resale websites where you might get a higher price per gown, but you’ll also pay a hefty commission fee?
These are all somewhat rhetorical questions, because there’s really no right or wrong answer here. It all depends on what is best for your unique situation. If you have the time to list your gowns on a resale website (including taking pictures, creating listings, responding to inquiries, sifting through spam, waiting to get paid, etc) then you will likely be rewarded financially for the effort. Bridal stores that buy wedding dresses are 99% of the time going to be an off-the-rack store. The exception to this might be if you are eliminating a bridal line and have current samples that another authorized retailer wants to acquire. But off-the-rack stores are often discount retailers that are looking to buy at deep discounts as well.
